A really quick mindfulness technique

This bite-size exercise is all about mindful breathing. Mindful breathing is among the most popular (and also effective) mindful exercises and there’s good reason for it. I’ve written about it in more detail here. You don’t any fancy equipment or anything for it, it’s totally free and accessible for everyone. Follow the steps below for a super quick mindfulness moment:

  1. Be aware of your own breathing. You don’t need to alter your breath at all, just become aware of it.
  2. When your mind wanders, bring it back. As soon as you start realise your thoughts are wandering away, gently bring your attention back to your breathing. Don’t worry too much about your wandering mind, but stay aware of it.

And that’s it. You can do this for a minute and an hour – it’s up to you. This such an effective little exercise, it can used in an array of situations – when you’re feeling a little panicky, overwhelmed, stressed, have too much to do or when you just feel like checking in with yourself.
